Rome

During the ten days spent in Rome, while the urban body workshop continued in Serbia and Macedonia, I visited almost all the churches, piazzas and buildings I studied in my 3rd year on Architecture. For me visiting the works of Miguel Angelo, Bernini and Borromini was a way to remember the lectures of Domingos Tavares, the history professor.
I also need to thank Ana and Xana for their hospitality. Thanks for the pastas, the ice creams, the lovely pizzeria and the delicious tiramissu.

At the end of the workshop we proposed to do something that could show what we found, confronting non-roma people with the reality of the camps.
The original idea consisted in formalising a outdoor panel with some pictures, plans and drawings of three different camps that could be exposed in the city centre of Rome. For example in Piazza Navona next to the paintings that tourists love so much.
Distributing flyers and confronting people with this reality would be a way to see their reaction and to check their knowledge about these communities.
Unfortunately that wasn't possible to do but the panel was finished and here it is.

Motivation letter

Urban Body_ 2008

First I have to say that the Rome workshop motivates me more than the other one (Mumbai) because as I am from a Latin country, I feel closer to the environment we will study.
I also think that the opportunity to develop an architectural and social design strategy by designing a competition program is a one-life time opportunity that deals directly with a contemporary problem.
This theme also remembers me groups of people that live in Portugal on similar conditions as the Gypsies; there, we called “ciganos”.

This assignment will integrate three different architecture schools: Delft, Roma Tre and Belgrade; as an Erasmus student I think the interaction between students from other nationality’s that will investigate a common problem will be an unforgettable and instructive experience for me.
As a member of the EU, I feel that this project deals with a familiar problem that in some way affects me and motivate me.

I looked for some information about Gypsies living in Rome and I found these two interesting pictures.
In spite of living in precarious conditions, these individuals seem to be happy and relaxed. Barely this is something that intrigues me knowing that this people will maybe be repatriated.
For me they reveal the reality I will face during the workshop and I can’t wait to see it for myself.
